Today one of my coworkers came to work dressed as a Lego man.
I could not stop laughing for an hour. Though the massive amounts of sugar I ingested today in the form of Halloween candy probably helped.

everyone should wear robots
I was excited to receive several packages in the mail yesterday, one of which was this utterly adorable fabric button ring from Melissa Abram, featuring a little retro-style robot.
I love the fact that he has a) a nose, and b) a clock. And that he is looking sideways. What is he looking at? A hot girl robot? Some tasty grommets? Who knows? He's a mysterious robot who's always on time.
I'm also rather partial to this little guy with the pointy Tin Man hat and wind-up key. He looks like he's going places, and I like a robot with ambition. If you're looking for a robot of your own, Melissa has plenty more, including robot bobby pins and hair elastics as well as rings (and other cute images if robots aren't your thing).

bruises make me nostalgic
My damaged knee is turning some wonderful colours. It makes me really miss the fall foliage back home in Ontario. As beautiful as the west coast is, the trees really tend to slack off in fall in the lower mainland. With the exception of the Japanese maples.
Just down the block from my place, an Acer palmatum var. dissectum is busy eating a lamp post. From the form I'm guessing it's an Inabe Shidare. The colour is so brilliant it almost hurts the eyes. It's like a giant stoplight at the end of the street. I may skulk down there in the dead of night and steal some clipping and try to grow my own little mini-stoplight.

i hiked up 495 metres and all I got was this lousy view
And I smashed my knee on a rock. That'll teach me to be one with nature.
It was a gorgeous day out today, so Mere and I decided to go for a hike up at Buntzen Lake, just east of the Burrard Inlet. I foolishly chose the Diez Vistas trail, which my guidebook mildly described as "challenging". Quite the sense of humour my guidebook has. Buntzen Lake is also where they filmed Lake Placid, if you happen to be a Betty White fan. Fortified with trail mix, maple buds and blueberry Pocky, we made it to the first viewpoint before time constraints made us turn back (or turn knee-first into a rock, as it happened). When the weather's good again, we'll go back and try the whole thing. There are Nueve other Vistas to see, of course.
Not far past the trailhead a floating bridge passes over the lower part of Buntzen Lake, which is not very lake-like at this time of year. It was quite chilly out and there was steam rising from the mudflats.

Funky little mushrooms. No, I didn't eat them. One act of extreme stupidity per day is enough.
Glorious.

I foresee a great deal of pain tomorrow, but it was worth it.

what the $#@! is that
People leave strange things in the lobby of my apartment building. A lot. So I started taking pictures of it. This is what greeted me when I left for work Friday morning.
What is it? An iguana with antlers and the pox? What are those yellow things? Why is it wearing lipstick? Where did it come from and who in their right mind would purchase such a thing in the first place?
These are the things that keep me up at night.
green aventurine
I'm usually not a fan of green aventurine, but I could not resist these luscious 16mm rounds.
These are a good deal more transparent than much of the green aventurine I've seen, and have dense mica inclusions. Their colour is closer to grass-green than the typical dull aventurine green and very intense. Mmm, juicy.

six more months without sun
The first year I moved to Vancouver, it poured rain nearly every single day in October. For a while I was afraid I made a terrible mistake. And then I just got used to being constantly wet. Umbrellas are for tourists, you know.
Fortunately this October has been a little better. I took this photo standing downtown waiting for Mei to pick me up to head for the Langley bead show. The city was beautifully cloudy and pastel. The pink building is Park Place, one of the largest buildings in downtown Vancouver at 35 storeys tall. It sits at 666 Burrard St, the devil's address. Just kidding! The number 666 is considered lucky in Chinese culture.
I'm quite enamoured with this building. It's big and it's pink. It's cheeky. It says, hey, I'm a big fat pink building with the address 666, wanna make something of it? I like a building with 'tude.
